Hello Quiet Mall Customer.

This is a step-by-step guide for setting up The Quiet Mall to work on various computers and digital devices. We hope you will find it helpful. Consider printing it out so you can reference it as we work.

If you are reading this, then we assume you have a copy of The Quiet Mall on your hard drive (probably in the "Downloads" sub-directory.

1. Setting it up on your Windows-based computer...

If you do not already have it installed (or have an old version), go to the Adobe site (http://www.adobe.com) and download the current version of Acrobat Reader. It is typically listed under "Downloads" on the main page of the site. We do not recommend you install Google Chrome or the associated Google Chrome at this time. Keep it simple.

Once downloaded and installed, select the Adobe Reader via your Start button. You will be presented with an initial menu. Ignore that and use your mouse or other pointing device to click "File", then "Open" from the ribbon menu at the top of this window. When you click "Open" you will be asked for the name of the file you wish to open. For this version of the Mall, that file name is "TQM111113.pdf". Find it and open it up with Reader.

Now an important step. From that same ribbon menu, click "Edit", then "Preferences". A new window will open. Under the column labeled "Categories" find the "Security (Enhanced)" option. Click "Security (Enhanced)". An open space is present with four buttons below. They are "Add File", "Add Folder Path", "Add Host" and "Remove". Click "Add File" and again, locate the file named "TQM111113.pdf". Highlight it with your mouse then click "Open". The Mall should now appear in that large blank space. Click "OK" at the bottom right to close the "Preferences" window. Your Mall is ready to go and you will not be pestered with security confirmation prompts.

Expected Behaviour

When you open Adobe Reader in future, the TQM file may still be in your "Open a Recent File" list in the initial welcome screen. Click on it to open. You will move about the document without security prompts. When you click on an external link, your browser will open a new window to display your selection. Close that window when you are finished exploring your selection.

2. Setting it up on an Apple notebook.

In this example we pick up a copy of the Mall from our Gmail inbox by clicking the "Download" option under the filename. Shortly thereafter a new window popped up with the first page of showing. We noted that no special adjustments were required to have the Mall conform to our expected behaviour. The system placed the TQM file in the "Downloads" area which may be accessed via the native "Finder" application. So simple. Thank you Apple.

We now leave the realm of the personal computer and head into the domain of the digital device. And with that transition comes economies - both from the manufacturer's and the consumer's perspective. The consumer will not be paying for a full-featured computer setup. The manufacturer will not be offering a fully-customizable rig. Compromises will be made and accepted... and that will affect how the PDF displays.

The first of the compromise is the "app". Whereas we normally use software (packaged in one form or another) to access and manipulate information, the app is now our conduit/translator between the information and capabilities of the digital device. Let's see how that works…

3. Setting it up on a iPad.

The app we chose for a flawless interpretation of the standard Mall PDF is "Perfect Reader Pro" ($4.99). From the icon at the upper left we are presented with an option called "Websites". We accessed our Gmail account and touched the TQM attachment. It was quickly opened. At the bottom of the screen to the left of the "Done" button, we touched the open icon and were given the choice "Open in Safari?" which we selected. Now that we are in Safari, we opened the attachment again and it opened in its own tab.

We are nearly there. Touch the Safari screen once and at the upper left you should see "Open with...". Touch that and select the Perfect Reader app icon. The Perfect Reader splash screen was displayed followed by the Mall. You may note the numerous small icons at the bottom of the screen - these are some of the Mall's pages. You will not have to interact with them. When you select a page to travel to, Perfect Reader will flip to it. When you select an external link, Perfect Reader will open a new Safari window. Simply touch "Close" at upper left when you are through with the site. You will be back to the Mall page.

In future, when you open the Perfect Reader app, you will see the "My Documents" desktop and may select the Mall directly with one touch.

Editor's Notes: We tried the standard Adobe Reader and GoodReader apps. The expected behaviour could not be produced for love nor money but did create a great deal of frustration on our part. Having to transit through Safari on our way to Perfect Reader also seems odd, but we accept it since this may be a consequence of condensing functions into a smaller device.

We hope that our effort here helps when setting up the Mall on its smaller cousin with its similar operating system.

4. Setting it up on an iPhone.

Our first stop is the app store. Truong Nguyen Ngoc's "Perfect Reader Pro" was available so we selected it. A familiar "My Documents" screen awaited us. We accessed our Gmail account through the app and touched the Mall file attachment which was quickly opened. Again (as in the case of the iPad) we touched the open file box in lower left and selected "Open in Safari". One last step - touching the Safari screen once and then touching the "Open with..." option and selecting Perfect Reader. In our test the screen when blank but we were unfazed. We opened the Perfect Reader app from our phone's main screen and found our Mall waiting.

When we selected an option from our Mall directory, we were asked if we wanted to go to a particular page. We touched that page and were directed appropriately. When we selected an external link, a Safari window was opened with a "Close" button at upper left. We browsed that site then clicked close. If the screen defaults to a grey hatched pattern, you can use the scroll bar at the bottom to get back to a page.

The Mall is a large PDF - probably as large as we would ever want to make for a small device such as the iPhone. Allow the iPhone a bit longer to process your requests until you get used to how it works. Orienting the phone horizontally may be helpful to you.

5. Setting it up on the Google Nexus,

Some of you may have been feeling left out by our three Apple products in a row. So here is our change-up pitch. It is a Google device so we will be obtaining our Mall via Gmail. We touched the three-vertical-spots icon at the far right of the attachment bar and selected "Save".

You may find the file you just downloaded via the central six-spot icon on your main screen, then the "Downloads" icon.

While on that same screen, select "Play Store". Select the "Top Free" apps and find the "Adobe Reader". This is the app designed by the creators of the PDF format. Install it. Open it. Select the Mall PDF from the "Documents" menu.

Expected behaviour results with the exception that you will be presented with a "Open" or "Cancel" choice when you select one of the external links. We consider this a small bother and even a possible benefit considering the accuracy of a touch-selection motif.

We were feeling frisky by this point so we thought we'd dip a toe into a different type of pond.

6. Setting it up on a Google Chromebook.

Again, we obtain a copy of the Mall via our Gmail inbox. We clicked on the "Download" option under the filename. From the "Apps" icon at the bottom of the screen we next clicked "Files" and found our Mall PDF. Google Chrome has a built-in PDF viewer so we thought we'd have a go...but it failed to recognize the options under "Core Shoppes" in our directory. Why?...when every other system could? We do not know but it was time to find an App that would.

We thought that we might learn from our previous efforts with the Nexus by repeating the same steps, so we: Clicked on the "Apps" icon (the program band at the bottom of the screen), clicked on the “Store" icon next to the Chrome browser icon and entered "PDF Reader" into the search box at upper left.

We selected "PDF Viewer 0.8.616" from the list and installed it. We also made sure to disable/delete all of the other options we had tried previously. In the Chrome browser under "More Tools" then "Extensions" we found the PDF reader installed. We checked the box titled "Allow access to file URLs" then accessed our file via the "Downloads" section. You can get there directly by typing "chrome://downloads" into Chrome's address bar.

The Mall directory displayed nicely. We clicked on a selection and poof! we were confronted with a blank page...until we noticed the scale value (find it at the top of the blank page). We used the options selector at the right of that group to choose "Automatic Zoom"...and the correct page popped right up. When we clicked on an external link, we were, in the same window, taken to the correct destination. But on returning we were again confronted by a blank window and the need to reset the zoom.

We returned to the Store and typed "PDFZEN" into the search box. This was one of the options listed when we searched for "PDF readers for Chromebook". The application installed and we asked it to open...but it went into a never ending upload spiral.

So for now (until Chromebook gets a proper PDF reader), we must advise you to stick with the previous plug-in...even given the annoying need to reset the zoom. If you search for PDF readers for Chromebook you will see that other people are also asking for this.

We hope these examples have helped you in setting up the Mall on your equipment and hope you enjoy our version of online shopping. You may contact us through the Mall Office links if necessary.
